Castles, Cathedrals & Courage

Castles, Cathedrals & Courage

Known as the "Garden of England", Kent is home to more castles, stately homes and gardens than any other region in Britain

This holiday includes visits to the medieval Penshurst Place & Gardens, the romantic Hever Castle, the darkly atmospheric Dover Castle, a guided tour of Canterbury Cathedral and a ride on Kent’s Mainline in Miniature which together all offer a taste of the “Garden of England.”

Day 1

A morning departure sees us travel to the South East with a lunch break en route arriving in time for our evening meal.

Day 2

This morning we travel through the countryside to Penshurst Place & Gardens, a 14th Century house once owned by Henry VIII which he used as a hunting lodge. You will be able to see the impressive medieval Baron's Hall and the state rooms. In the afternoon we travel to Hever Castle. This romantic Castle is famous for being the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. This 13th Century Castle has splendid paneled rooms containing fine furniture and tapestries. Surrounding the Castle are formal gardens and a unique splashing water maze. After a very enjoyable day we return to our hotel.

Day 4

We depart this morning and travel to the sea port of Dover, where on our arrival we travel to the Castle. Situated on the famous White Cliffs of Dover this magnificent Castle has guarded our shores for twenty centuries with its secret wartime tunnels and vivid Dunkirk evacuation exhibition. In the afternoon we travel to Hythe and join the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway for a return journey on the famous one-third size steam and diesel locomotives which travel across Romney Marsh to Dungeness, one of the largest shingle landscapes in the world. After an enjoyable and varied day we return to our hotel.
