West Country's Borderlands

Join us for a lovely break staying in the Devon countryside, an ideal location to explore the area and its attractions spanning the counties of Devon and Cornwall.

This charming new tour is perfectly positioned to explore some of the most stunning houses and gardens straddling the Devonshire-Cornwall border. We also include a visit to two prestigious National Trust properties, a harbour cruise around Plymouth harbour and a visit to Mount Edgcumbe on the Rame Peninsula.

Day 1

We leave from your joining point and travel across the country to the West Country, stopping en route for lunch and refreshments before we reach our hotel late afternoon, where we are welcomed with a glass of Pimms.

Day 2

Today we travel the short distance into the famous maritime city of Plymouth where we board the boat for a harbour cruise and then land at Cremyll Quay. On our arrival we will be met by a local shuttle bus and taken to Mount Edgcumbe House. This beautiful mansion famous for its 18th century gardens are set within an 865 acre country park on the Rame Peninsula. We first visit the great hall before we are left to explore the magnificent interior and formal gardens. After a pleasant day we meet our coach which takes us back to the hotel, travelling across the Tamar Bridge back into Devon.

Day 3

- This morning after breakfast we board our coach for the short journey to visit Buckland Abbey, once owned by Cistercian Monks nearly 800 years ago but now looked after by the National Trust. The Abbey is part museum and part house and is crammed with treasures such as Sir Francis Drake's drum and offers far reaching views of the Tavy Valley. After an enjoyable visit we travel back to the hotel.

Day 4

This morning after breakfast we travel cross the Devonshire border into Cornwall and visit Cotehele, built nearly 600 years ago. The hall and surrounding rooms have changed little since Tudor times and the 12 acre garden features terraces, ponds and orchards. You can take an enjoyable stroll or the shuttle bus to Cotehele Quay where you will find the 1899 Tamar sailing barge called "Shamrock", Lime Kilns and the discovery centre.
